How to Fix a Running Toilet: 5 Common Causes and Fixes

A running toilet is one of those problems that’s easy to ignore — until you get a water bill that makes you do a double take. A toilet that won’t stop running can waste anywhere from a few gallons to hundreds of gallons a day, depending on what’s actually wrong with it.

The good news: almost every running toilet comes down to one of five things, and none of them require calling a plumber. I’ve broken down each cause below, how to tell if it’s the one you’re dealing with, and exactly how to fix it — most of these take less than 20 minutes.

1. A Worn-Out Flapper

This is the single most common cause of a running toilet, by a wide margin. The flapper is the rubber (or silicone) valve at the bottom of the tank that lifts when you flush, letting water rush into the bowl, then drops back down to reseal the tank. Over time it warps, cracks, or develops a mineral buildup that keeps it from sealing flush against the valve seat — so water keeps trickling into the bowl, and the fill valve keeps topping off the tank to compensate.

How to tell: Drop a few drops of food coloring into the tank and wait 10 minutes without flushing. If color shows up in the bowl, water is leaking past the flapper.

The fix: Shut off the water supply valve behind the toilet, flush to drain the tank, unhook the old flapper from the pegs or the overflow tube, and snap in a new one rated for your toilet’s make and model (most are universal, but check the flush-valve opening size — 2 inches is standard, some are 3). Flappers are cheap and this is about as beginner-friendly as toilet repairs get.

2. A Failing Fill Valve

The fill valve is the taller mechanism on the left side of the tank that controls how much water comes in after a flush and shuts off once the tank reaches the right level. When the internal seal wears out, the valve can’t fully shut, so water keeps trickling in — and you’ll often hear a faint hissing or a periodic refill sound even when nobody’s used the toilet.

How to tell: Listen for a hissing sound coming from the tank, or check whether the water level sits right at (or above) the top of the overflow tube — that’s a sign the valve isn’t shutting off properly.

The fix: Fill valves aren’t really designed to be repaired piece by piece — once the internal seal goes, the whole valve gets replaced. It’s a straightforward swap: shut off the water, drain the tank, disconnect the supply line and the old valve from underneath, and install the new one. 3. The Float Is Set Too High

Every toilet tank has a float — either a ball on an arm or a cup that rides up and down the fill valve — that tells the fill valve when to shut off. If the float is set too high, the water level rises above the top of the overflow tube and just drains continuously into the bowl through the overflow, which can look and sound exactly like a bad flapper or fill valve even though both parts are fine.

How to tell: Take the tank lid off and check the water level. It should sit about half an inch to an inch below the top of the overflow tube. If it’s higher than that — especially if it’s level with or above the tube — the float is the problem.

The fix: On a ball-float system, gently bend the metal arm down slightly to lower the shut-off point. On a cup-style float (common on newer fill valves), there’s usually a small clip or screw you adjust to lower it. Make small adjustments and flush to test — you don’t want to overcorrect and end up with too little water to clear the bowl properly.

4. A Chain That’s Too Long, Too Short, or Snagged

The flush handle connects to the flapper by a small chain. If that chain is too long, it can get pinched under the flapper when it drops back down, holding it slightly open. If it’s too short, it can hold the flapper up just enough to keep water trickling through — same result, opposite cause.

How to tell: Take the tank lid off and watch the chain right after a flush. If it looks taut when the flapper is supposed to be fully seated, or if it’s draped in a way that could get caught, that’s your issue.

The fix: Aim for about half an inch of slack in the chain when the flapper is closed — enough to move freely without being loose enough to tangle. Most chains have multiple link-hole attachment points on the flush arm specifically so you can dial in the length; unhook it and move it up or down a link or two as needed.

5. A Cracked Overflow Tube

Less common, but worth ruling out if the first four don’t fix it: the overflow tube (the vertical tube in the center of the tank that the flapper chain and fill valve refill line connect to) can crack, especially on older toilets or ones that have had rough handling. A crack lets water leak out below the intended fill line, so the fill valve keeps running to compensate.

How to tell: Look closely at the tube itself for hairline cracks, and check for water seeping from partway down the tube rather than just flowing over the top.

The fix: On most modern toilets, the overflow tube is part of the fill valve assembly, so replacing the fill valve (see #2 above) fixes this too. On older two-piece flush-valve setups, the overflow tube may be a separate part attached to the flush valve, which usually means pulling the tank off the bowl — at that point, it’s worth deciding whether a full flush valve replacement kit makes more sense than a single part.

A Quick Way to Narrow It Down

  • Hear hissing right after a flush that fades out? Start with the fill valve.
  • Toilet runs randomly, even hours after the last flush? Start with the flapper.
  • Water sitting right at the top of the overflow tube? Check the float first.
  • Everything above looks fine but it still runs? Check the chain, then the overflow tube.

Most of the time, a running toilet is a five-dollar part and twenty minutes of your time — not a plumber’s bill. Start with the flapper since it’s the most common culprit and the easiest to check, then work down the list if that’s not it.
